I had lived in a large Edwardian house for 46 years and brought up a family there.  Gradually they left home and I needed to downsize, the house was far too big for my needs and it required updating. I had the opportunity to purchase a 1960’s bungalow, fairly nearby, in a very convenient position which met all my requirements.  My family and I could see its potential for being updated and transformed for this day and age.

This was all new to me and to achieve this, I commissioned Adam as my Architect who with his vision, skills and dedication has certainly achieved a wonderful, attractive, welcoming home. He suggested ideas that I wouldn’t even have thought of, everything has been updated, electrics, plumbing, bedroom extension to include an ensuite, bathroom extension, lounge bay window with window seat (wonderful view) and the ‘wow’ factor of a timber framed extension from the kitchen which provides a dining and sitting area. The whole bungalow is light and airy and easy to maintain.

Adam was my project manager and we would meet every week with the builder, with whom Adam had an excellent working relationship, to make sure everything was on track. Should there be a need for any minor changes, Adam always consulted me.  He advised me on flooring, suggested under floor heating in the extension area, which proved so comforting in the winter months, bathroom fittings, kitchen fittings and lighting, consulted me about where I would like electric plug sockets and light switches. His design skills were implemented to widen the drive, and a change to the back garden to include patio areas and choice of paving to compliment the tiled area in the extension. Nothing was ever too much trouble for him and I have a beautiful home loved by friends, who would all like to live in my bungalow. My grandchildren love coming here and always find the ambiance created very relaxing.

When anyone comments this is so lovely, I have to give Adam the credit, it is thanks to his design, advice, suggestions, interpretation of my requirements that have made it such a successful transformation into a beautiful home. So much so, that the bungalow next door was sold soon after my renovations were completed.  The purchasers could see that I had had work done and asked to come and see inside. They were so impressed by Adam’s skill that they have commissioned him to renovate their bungalow, this obviously speaks volumes.

We purchased our house in 2011 to become our family home. The location and character of our property was exactly what we wanted but the layout and design of our family home was far from what we desired. A mixture of 17 C original cottage blended with multiple extensions across a 300 year period meant that the house just did not flow. Being a cottage without significant extensions getting our house to become a home would be challenging. The layout we achieved with Adam and his team surpassed even our best expectations and now we have a very light an airy cottage with plenty of good family living space both inside and out. All this was achieved without adding a single Sqm of extra extension space. The charm of the 17C cottage has been maintained whilst adding subtle modern touches taking advantage of massive improvement in insulation and energy efficiency which has also resulted in a greater reduction in running costs. The flexibility and speed of the work AR|Designs produced helped us along our journey right from initial concept of helping us to understand what we wanted from our future home, right through the build phase (which throws up lots of challenges on an old property) to the finishing touches that finalise a home. We felt that Adam was a real part of our process and would not hesitate to recommend his work to others.

We chose to work with Adam after meeting with him. He was very professional and friendly and was very keen to listen to us and our ideas. We found our house and it was a little run down and in need of some TLC as well as having a real opportunity to extend. We knew that this house would be our forever home and one where we wanted to raise our family. Adam took this on board and went away and started sketching ideas. Throughout the entire process, we met regularly and communicated via email and phone calls. What we loved about working with Adam was his enthusiasm and passion – he really wanted to design the best home he possibly could for us and it really felt as he was invested in our dream as much as we were.

When meeting with Adam, during the initial ideas phase, he was easy to bounce ideas off and always tried to accommodate our wishes no matter how extravagant some of them were!  We needed to have a column in the middle of our open plan room yet we didn’t want it to be seen. Adam integrated the most magnificent fire place in to the design and it really is the perfect feature of the room. When going through the drawings with us, Adam was clear and took his time. I find visualising the end result difficult, and Adam knew this and had 2D and 3D drawings from different perspectives ready to ensure I knew exactly what he was thinking.

Once the designs were finalised, Adam even came and met with our neighbours to talk through the project and to answer any of their concerns and worries as well. We then submitted his drawings to the planners, where he had written such a detailed proposal including research of projects surrounding us, and telephone calls to the council to ensure they had everything they needed, and we were given permission in a short amount of time.

Once we had chosen our builder, Adam project managed the site for us which was a huge help and weight off our shoulders as we had to move out of the house and were over an hour away. Adam was on site 3-4 times a week to answer any questions from the builders, to ensure the house was being completed exactly to the plan and to ensure the builder’s tea breaks were kept to a minimum! As we saw the rooms being built, we were even discussing making some changes which didn’t faze Adam at all and within days, we had amended drawings sent to us to agree and then sent to the builders. It was a great feeling knowing that Adam was there – somebody we could trust to build our dream house.

We have now been back in our house for over a year and there isn’t anything that I would change about it. I love pulling up on to our driveway and walking through the front door – we still can’t believe this is our house. Thank you so much Adam
